15th webinar "ARG in bioaerosols"
The contribution of agriculture in antimicrobial use (AMU) and resistance (AMR) is recognized globally. Indeed, in Canada, 82% of antimicrobials were sold for use in production animals. To structure Canada’s response to address AMR, the pan-Canadian Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, which is coherent with the quadripartite (WHO, FAO, UNEP, WOAH) One Health vision, was launched in the summer of 2023. Most of the projects related to AMR at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada are impacted by this Action Plan and fall in the same themes overseeing Dr. Poulin-Laprade research program, which are to evaluate animal production practises with potential to reduce AMU, to develop alternatives to AMU, and to evaluate the transmission of AMR in the environment. Dr. Poulin-Laprade uses a One Health and holistic approach in which she contextualizes functional genes that can be hosted by mobile genetic elements, found in microbes dwelling in various animals as well and in the broader environment. Dr. Poulin-Laprade will provide an overview of her research program, as well as key findings.
