Addressing Antibiotic Resistance in Livestock Farming: Exploring Alternatives and Challenges in Microbiota Management
The use of antibiotics plays a central role in controlling infectious bacterial diseases. Intensive livestock farming conditions render animals particularly susceptible to such diseases, underscoring the significance of antibiotic use in this sector. However, antibiotic resistance is an increasingly alarming phenomenon. Hence, it is imperative to provide the agri-food industry with alternatives to antibiotics. It is widely acknowledged that the microbiota plays a pivotal role in animal health, as well as in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes. In this presentation, we will delve into the inherent difficulties associated with studying antibiotic resistance within the microbiota using current technologies. Additionally, we will examine the effects of feeding pigs and poultry with feeds considered as potential alternatives to antibiotics. Furthermore, we will briefly overview resistance in some key animal pathogens.
